TEKTELIC Expands Embedded LNS Gateway to Simplify BMS & Industrial Integration

TEKTELIC is excited to announce a major update to its Embedded LNS Gateway, adding powerful new features that simplify integration with BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, and REST API. These enhancements allow facility managers and system integrators to more easily connect LoRaWAN® devices directly to Building Management Systems (BMS) without the need for external network servers. These capabilities are officially available now.
Product Update Overview
The TEKTELIC KONA Embedded LNS Gateway has long provided a reliable and fully self-contained LoRaWAN® network server solution within the KONA series gateways. With this latest update, it now includes additional native support for leading building and industrial integration protocols, making it even more valuable for smart buildings, industrial automation, and localized deployments.
This all-in-one platform continues to offer a complete LoRaWAN Network Server (LNS), a web-based device management interface, protocol integration capabilities, and application server functions—now enriched with extended interoperability.
Where It Fits Best
The Embedded LNS Gateway is purpose-built for:
- Smart buildings leveraging BACnet-based BMS platforms
- Industrial environments utilizing Modbus TCP
- Customized IoT deployments with Node-RED workflows or REST-based interfaces
- Environments requiring fully localized, secure LoRaWAN® infrastructure
Complete Local Network & Device Control
Using the intuitive KONA Link web interface, users can provision and manage LoRaWAN gateways using pre-installed or custom device profiles. These profiles define LoRaWAN parameters, network join methods (OTAA or ABP), and payload codecs, following the LoRa Alliance Payload Codec API standard for compatibility and reusability.
The interface enables advanced configuration including frequency/channel settings and Adaptive Data Rate (ADR) control. Users can also monitor real-time LoRaWAN traffic and update payload codecs to reflect firmware changes or evolving sensor outputs.
New: Built-In BACnet/IP Support
The Embedded LNS Gateway now includes a built-in BACnet IP server that bridges LoRaWAN devices with building systems for HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management.
Uplink payloads can be mapped to BACnet object types such as Analog Input, Binary Input, Character String Value, and Multi-state Value. Downlink operations are enabled via BACnet objects like Analog Value, Binary Value, Character String Value, and Octet String. For complex binary payloads, TEKTELIC’s KONA Atlas tool ensures accurate encoding and system compatibility.
New: Modbus TCP for Industrial Systems
Industrial environments benefit from Modbus TCP support integrated via Node-RED. The Embedded LNS Gateway includes a default Node-RED flow for Modbus TCP, which can be easily customized to map specific LoRaWAN payload fields to Modbus register addresses.
This functionality enables direct integration with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), SCADA systems, and other Modbus-based equipment, reducing deployment time and complexity.
New: Node-RED, MQTT, and HTTP Flexibility
The built-in Node-RED environment enables visual programming for custom workflows and integrations. Developers can forward LoRaWAN messages to cloud or on-premise systems using MQTT or HTTP.
TEKTELIC provides sample Node-RED flows that simplify configuration, including examples for publishing to MQTT topics or sending data via HTTP POST requests—ideal for rapid prototyping or enterprise deployment.
New: REST API Integration for BMS Platforms
Alongside BACnet, the Embedded LNS Gateway now offers a native REST API for direct HTTP-based communication with BMS platforms, including the Niagara Framework.
BMS clients can retrieve real-time sensor data, monitor device states, and issue downlink commands using standard HTTP requests. This eliminates the need for protocol conversion middleware and supports streamlined integration with modern control systems.
Each Embedded LNS Gateway operates as a fully independent LoRaWAN network, while remaining centrally manageable through REST-based BMS platforms—providing distributed resilience with centralized oversight.
Conclusion
This latest update to TEKTELIC’s Embedded LNS Gateway further enhances its versatility, making it an ideal choice for smart building, industrial, and remote IoT deployments. With expanded support for BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, REST API, MQTT, and HTTP, facility managers and developers can build highly integrated, localized solutions with faster deployment times and reduced operational complexity.
The updated Embedded LNS Gateway features are available now.
