AI-Driven Flood Early Warning System for Erbil City Using TEKTELIC KONA Macro LoRaWAN®
Summary

As cities look for better ways to protect communities and strengthen emergency preparedness, real-time environmental monitoring and flood detection is becoming an increasingly important part of public safety strategies.

In Erbil, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, TimeNet developed and deployed an AI-driven flood early warning system designed to provide authorities and citizens with timely information during severe weather events. To support the deployment, TimeNet selected TEKTELIC KONA Macro gateways as the backbone of the LoRaWAN® network, providing reliable connectivity across the monitoring infrastructure.

This success story explores how the solution combines environmental monitoring, real-time analytics, and public alerting to help improve flood preparedness and support faster decision-making when it matters most.

The Challenge

Erbil City and its surrounding areas face a growing risk of flash flooding during seasonal heavy rainfall. Flood risk can develop quickly when rainfall intensity increases, river and drainage water levels rise, or severe storm conditions move rapidly toward populated areas.

Traditional flood monitoring methods are often based on manual observation, fragmented field reporting, and delayed communication. These methods make it difficult for authorities to detect dangerous conditions early, understand the real situation across multiple locations, and warn citizens before flooding becomes critical.

The municipality needed more than a basic monitoring system. The objective was to create a reliable, city-scale early warning solution capable of continuously monitoring environmental conditions, analyzing data in real time, forecasting potential risks, and delivering timely alerts to both authorities and citizens.

KONA Macro TimeNet 3

The Solution

TimeNet designed and deployed an IoT-based flood early warning system using TEKTELIC KONA Macro LoRaWAN® gateways as the wireless communication backbone.

The solution includes eight KONA Macro gateways installed in strategic locations throughout Erbil and surrounding areas, providing reliable LoRaWAN® connectivity for a distributed network of environmental monitoring devices.

The system continuously collects data from multiple sources, including:

  • River water level sensors to monitor rising water levels in vulnerable areas.
  • Rain gauges to measure rainfall intensity and accumulation.
  • Temperature sensors to support environmental monitoring and forecasting.
  • Lightning detection sensors to identify severe storm activity.
  • Wind speed and wind direction sensors to support weather pattern analysis.

Sensor data is transmitted through the LoRaWAN® network to TimeNet’s in-house developed smart platform. The platform analyzes live data, identifies abnormal conditions, assigns risk levels, and generates real-time public alerts.

The platform is connected to a public-facing mobile application that provides authorities and citizens with flood risk notifications, danger-level updates, area-specific warnings, and AI-driven forecasts based on both live and historical environmental data.

By combining wide-area LoRaWAN® connectivity, real-time environmental monitoring, and intelligent analytics, the solution enables Erbil City to move from reactive flood response to proactive flood risk management.

Six Key Pain Points the Customer Resolved

1. Delayed flood detection

TimeNet-Platform

Before this system, flood risk could develop faster than traditional manual reporting could capture. The new system continuously monitors environmental conditions, allowing potential risks to be identified earlier.

2. Fragmented field reporting

Manual observation and disconnected reporting methods made it difficult to understand flood risk across multiple locations. The LoRaWAN® network now collects data from distributed monitoring points and consolidates it into a single platform for analysis and visualization.

3. Lack of real-time public warning

The municipality needed a reliable way to notify citizens and authorities before conditions became dangerous. The mobile application now delivers real-time notifications, danger-level alerts, and area-specific warnings.

4. High cost and complexity of wired infrastructure

Many monitoring locations are difficult, expensive, or impractical to connect using traditional wired infrastructure. The TEKTELIC KONA Macro gateways enabled wide-area wireless coverage while reducing deployment costs and installation complexity.

5. Need for low-power remote connectivity

Monitoring locations are often situated in remote or difficult-to-access areas. LoRaWAN® technology enables long-range communication while supporting low-power operation and efficient network management.

6. Need for predictive intelligence, not only monitoring

The municipality required more than visibility into current conditions. By combining real-time environmental data with AI-driven forecasting, the platform helps authorities identify potential risks earlier and make more informed decisions.

Why the TEKTELIC KONA Macro Gateway Was Selected

KONA Macro TimeNet 1

For a city-scale flood early warning system, the communication backbone had to deliver the lowest deployment cost, lowest long-term operating cost, and highest reliability over a 10+ year operating life. TimeNet selected the KONA Macro gateway because the project required more than basic wireless connectivity.

KONA Macro gateways are designed for carrier-grade outdoor infrastructure. They are engineered to support 0.99999 availability, operate reliably in harsh environmental conditions, and maintain strong RF performance even when mounted on telecom towers near high-power 3G, 4G, and 5G transmitters. Unlike lower-grade gateways that may experience degraded performance in difficult RF environments, the KONA Macro is designed to provide stable, long-range LoRaWAN® coverage without compromising network reliability.

The gateways are also designed for long-life operation and 100% remote management, reducing the need for site visits, manual maintenance, and field intervention. This is critical for public safety infrastructure, where the system must remain operational during severe weather events and where every truck roll increases operating cost and risk.

The combination of superior RF performance, carrier-grade reliability, harsh-environment operation, remote management, and a 10+ year design life allows large areas to be served with fewer gateways while maintaining strong coverage and network reliability. As a result, the TEKTELIC KONA Macro provides the low deployment and operating costs, long-term reliability, and performance required for critical flood early warning infrastructure.

Conclusion

The Erbil flood early warning project demonstrates how LoRaWAN® technology, TEKTELIC gateway infrastructure, and locally developed smart city applications can work together to improve public safety and emergency preparedness.

By deploying eight TEKTELIC KONA Macro gateways across strategic locations, TimeNet created a scalable communications foundation for real-time environmental monitoring, AI-driven flood forecasting, and public alerting.

The result is a practical smart city solution that helps authorities respond more effectively to potential flood risks, strengthens emergency preparedness, reduces infrastructure costs, and provides a foundation for future smart city applications.
