Occupancy Sensor
What is it?
An occupancy sensor is a device that detects the presence of a person in an indoor space and can automatically adjust the lights, temperature, or ventilation systems accordingly. Besides, such a sensor can send a notification or an update to a room booking system when someone occupies the meeting room or if a meeting is booked but nobody shows up. Occupancy sensors can use different technologies or a combination of them, to sense motion and heat emitted by humans.
How does it work?
An occupancy sensor works by detecting the presence of a person in an indoor space using motion and heat sensors. For example, TEKTELIC VIVID detects motion with a PIR lens, sending updates about people’s presence via the LoRaWAN® network. TEKTELIC also proposes a complete end-to-end solution for occupancy monitoring, which consists of an occupancy sensor, display tablet, and LoRaWAN® gateway. It works as follows: the meeting room is booked through the display tablet or Google Calendar/Microsoft Outlook, which shows the room’s availability. The occupancy sensor, in turn, will send a notification to the meeting organizer if no motion is detected within the room but it is booked. Data is sent via the LoRaWAN® network, which allows for low energy consumption and wireless transmission.
Occupancy sensors can also automatically adjust the lights, temperature, or ventilation systems to save energy and improve comfort as well as initiate or cancel the meeting based on room occupancy. It can also send a notification or an update to a room booking system to avoid conflicts or cancellations. Plus, with occupancy monitoring you can significantly improve workplace health, contributing to better productivity, focus, and creativity.
